Faith-Informed vs. Christian Fiction: What’s the Difference?

You’ve probably seen this question pop up on social media — the carousels, the reels, the comment threads. And if you’ve spent any time in the world of Christian books, you’ve probably noticed two phrases: Christian fiction and faith-informed fiction.

Are they the same thing?
Not quite.

Are they both valuable?
Absolutely.

What Is Christian Fiction?

Christian fiction is rooted directly in Christian faith. Prayer, Scripture, church life, and explicit conversations about God often appear on the page. Characters may wrestle with their beliefs, grow spiritually, or experience redemption arcs that clearly reflect Biblical truth.

The faith elements are visible and intentional.

For many readers, this is deeply comforting. It offers reinforcement, encouragement, and stories that align clearly with their worldview.

What Is Faith-Informed Fiction?

Faith-informed fiction may not include overt Scripture references or altar-call moments. Instead, faith informs the moral framework, themes, and character arcs.

You’ll often see:

  • Redemption

  • Sacrificial love

  • Forgiveness

  • Hope after suffering

  • Moral consequence

  • Restoration

The story may not preach. Instead, it reflects a worldview shaped by faith.

Sometimes the author is a Christian writing for a broader audience. Sometimes the spiritual themes are subtle but intentional. The light is present — just not always named.

But at FaithFic, we believe the conversation goes deeper than definitions. It isn’t ultimately about terminology — it’s about light.

Why Both Are Important

Not every reader is in the same place spiritually.

Some prefer overt faith discussions. Some are exploring quietly. And some want stories they can share with a neighbor who might hesitate to pick up something labeled “Christian.”

Both forms of storytelling can plant seeds. Both can comfort. Both can remind readers that goodness, hope, and redemption are still possible.

In a culture saturated with confusion and compromise, stories rooted in truth matter.

Why FaithFic Supports Both

The FaithFic Directory exists to highlight indie and small press authors whose faith informs their work. Sometimes that expression is overtly Christian. Sometimes it’s gently woven through theme and character.

We believe Christian creators can write in different tones and still honor God with their storytelling.

What unites these authors isn’t a marketing label — it’s a commitment to stories that reflect light rather than darkness, redemption rather than despair, and hope rather than hopelessness.

That’s something worth supporting.

No matter how a Christian author chooses to write — whether overtly Christian or faith-informed — we believe their public life and creative work should reflect the faith they profess.

FaithFic exists to support authors whose stories and witness align, not just in theme, but in testimony.
